The Rihla

Growing tired of the king's caravan was an impossible task and I would've stayed forever if I could, but I had to join a Hajj caravan returning to Mecca. A king in a land I passed through showed me charity and gave me a camel, but I somehow became sick with diarrhea and by time I got back to Mecca I was extremely feeble.
I really needed a break, in a year I had traveled more than 4,000 miles, crossed mountains and deserts, visited most of the great cities of Iraq and western Persia, met scholars, saints, judges, and even a Mongol king. I lived in Mecca for about a year before I was ready to travel again.
