Rome is layered. It is a mix of ancient and modern, renaissance and medieval. All of these different eras, ideals, and beliefs mixing together to what we all see while walking the streets of Rome today. The Piazza del Popolo, along with Rome’s many other piazzas and campos, is the perfect example of this mash up of history. Roman citizens and tourist alike laugh here, play here, eat here, hangout here, and everything in between. Roman citizens with modern style sit on centuries old steps and eat gelato from gelaterias that were started just a hundred years ago, nothing compared to the relics of antiquity you find up and down every street. Colossal churches headline streets that contain Gucci and Louis Vouiton stores. In the center sits an obelisk taken thousands of years ago from Egypt, a reminder of the relationship held between Cleopatra and Rome’s many emperors and the prosperity the ports of Rome and Alexandria shared. In the distance is the wall, the general border people associate with real Rome and new Rome, that represents Rome’s rich history in the republic and imperial days. Immigrants sell selfie sticks and mini helicopters representing the diversity of the city. The Piazza is the essence of rome in a picture.
