The Romans were great engineers, builders, warriors and much much more but even the mighty roman empire liked to take a break from all of this every now and then and have a little fun. From the beginning of Roman history we have records of them passing the time with all sorts of games and events. The first thing that pops into mind of course when thinking about this subject is the Colosseum. The Colosseum was the epitome of the Roman pastime. In this huge arena games of all sorts would be put on display for all to see. Gladiator fights, animal shows, public executions, acrobatic shows, naval battles, the list goes on and on for things the Roman public lined up to see. But the Colosseum isn’t the only thing that the public passed their time with. They also enjoyed playing simple games, often like todays modern board games, which usually included something like modern day dice, referred to as “lots” back in that time. Then of course the Romans had spectacles of similar scale to the Colosseum such as the Circus Maximus which hosted things like chariot races and filled a huge stadium. These were just a few of the things the Romans did in the days before twitter and instagram.
