Day 32 - Park #7

Mt. Olympic National Park, 08.01.2017

Woke up at 7 to bright morning sunshine falling on a field of lavender with no one else around. Truly one of the best camping spots we’ve encountered in four years.

Breakfast in Sequim, WA at the Oak Table, a French–themed place with items like salmon northwest omelets and pancakes to die for … this was a good start to the day.

Entered Olympic National Park, another natural wonder of the US. We didn’t do much more than set up camp and plan the next three days in the park. We’re staying at a place called Log Cabin Resort, which was founded in 1895. The main lodge is a little tired and in need of a facelift, but at 122 years of age, it’s not bad. (We should be so lucky.) The camp adjoins Lake Crescent, which is another glacial lake that’s perfectly clear to the bottom at 25 feet. As the day rolled on, we noticed that it starting looking hazy and were told that the haze was in fact smoke from two wildfires many miles away. We’re hoping it gets cleared up soon.

Before dinner we took a hike on a rails-to-trails project through the woods and along the lake. The pines here are minimum100-footers and combing them with the mossy underbrush and streams --- it puts you in mind of the forests in Lord of the Rings or Jurassic Park.
