Then I visted Auschwitz because is one of the most famous cities that participated in the WW2 and I wanted to know its history. Auschwitz, in Polish Oświęcim, is a small town with a busy history. It was Austrian territory, belonging to the Kingdom of Bohemia, Prussia and Poland.
When Oświęcim had a railway station around 1900, the city flourished economically. After World War I, the city became part of Poland again.
Shortly after the outbreak of World War II, in September 1939, Oświęcim was occupied by the Wehrmacht and annexed to the German Reich. In 1940, under the leadership of Heinrich Himmler, the SS quickly turned the area into a sprawling base camp complex (Auschwitz I), which was later joined by Auschwitz-Birkenau (Auschwitz II), the huge concentration and extermination camp.
