I visited the San Pedro’s Basilica because is the most famous church and is in the Vatican City. San Pedro’s Basilica is a Renaissance-style church in Vatican City. The basilica was built according to tradition on the burial place of San Pedro, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus and the first bishop of Rome. To maintain this tradition, the Popes are now buried inside the basilica.
Considered one of the holiest places in Christendom, it was built to replace the old San Pedro’s Basilica between 1506 and 1626. It was designed by the best old masters of the time, such as Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lawrence Bernini.
Today the church serves as a symbol of Renaissance architecture, as well as being a comprehensive pilgrimage site, it is a papal basilica and not a cathedral, as it is not the seat of a bishop. The Archbasilica of San Juan de Letrán is actually the cathedral church of Rome.
