My Travel Diary

We did kind of "lay down tracks" as we moved east to west to east on our two month practice run in our new home. However, as I traveled, I found I was drawn to things that weren't even on my radar a few months ago. I was lucky since I was in the passenger seat - I got to view the scenery, read billboards and search the internet for interesting things as Bill drove. I frequented the Roadside America app which points out "places of interest" that are unique or quirky. So in honor of the holidays and a traditional holiday song, I am listing a few of my favorite things (I have omitted my family and friends because - duh - they ARE my favorite things!):
I found that I am drawn to GIANT things - things that aren't necessarily natural to the area. I figured I would make taking pictures with these giant things my "thing". Some are natural and some are man-made - equally as photo-worthy! Loveland Pass, Colorado - while not technically a giant, it is the highest and snowiest place we visited. Giant Mothman - ask Bill. Giganticus Headicus - the most

unique piece of history along Route 66. Giant pistachio in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Giant beef cow in Amarillo, TX - along with giant 72 oz steak (which I did not try to eat). Giant saguaro cactus in New Mexico - I WILL go back to the Saguaro National Park to see these monsters up close and (not too) personal! Giant dinosaurs and Stonehenge. And giant aliens in Roswell, New Mexico. Yes, people, they ARE real ...

I love rock formations - not necessarily mountains. Driving through the southwestern US, the scenery was amazing. The different colors, patterns and shapes were all intriguing. Have not been to the Grand Canyon yet, but will have to soon!

Pecans and pistachios. Seeing them growing and picking nuts from the trees is very cool. A quiet, early morning walk through a pecan tree grove was an experience I want to do again.

Finally - cotton fields! I am in love with cotton fields. They stretch out for miles down south and, if you are lucky, you will see the rolled cotton bales ready for storing! I wanted to get into the fields and roll in the cotton balls (or bolls, take your pick) - without the sticks, of course. Yes, I did go into a field and pick my own cotton. There was lots - it won't be missed ...

There are so many things to see - use the Roadside America app to find quirky things in your area. To quote their website, "it's worth the detour". Travel safe, travel fun - but travel!!
