My Travel Diary

Our chariot awaits - we are taking the Alaska Marine Highway System Ferry Kennicott to Bellingham, Washington, a trip that will take us 2 1/2 days. We have booked a two-bed berth, we have books to read, cribbage to learn and snacks along. The ferry has full meal service so we are set! Setting sail from Juneau on Wednesday afternoon did not come without challenges - we did get all or our earthly possessions with us (does Bill know what I packed? I think not....) but it was really hard deciding what goes and what stays. Memories are in my things and to pare those memories down was difficult but it was finished. Ferry to Bellingham

Juneau

Knowing that an RV can't accommodate some things

due to travel made decisions somewhat easier and anything that came with us to Juneau but was never used (can you say covered pedestal cake plate?) stayed behind. Luckily for me our current landlord wanted to use the unit we lived in these last four years as a VRBO rental, and she purchased all my furniture, dishes, glass and silverware.

Our route will take us down the Inside Passage to Bellingham, Washington. We will make one stop in Ketchikan, a small town that we have visited many times. Weather is perfect, small clouds under a beautiful September sun! On the way into Ketchikan harbor, we were treated to a show by a pod of killer whales just off our port side! While we could go ashore here for a "walkabout", we decided to stay on board this morning and enjoy the sun and views from the outside deck. We may have spirited some screwdrivers in our water bottles - shhh don't tell! While we can drink our own alcohol in the privacy of

our cabin, it is not allowed anywhere else.

The ferry will leave Ketchikan mid-afternoon, then a straight shot to Bellingham. We plan on learning to play cribbage on our trip and have plenty of books to read. They even have a movie theater on board so we will check out the evening show. No phone or wifi service until we reach Washington state so I will take photos along the way and update you this weekend.
