Intermission #4

Lake Superior

These short chapters I've titled "intermissions" are the result of travel between places, those interesting stops on our way to our final destinations. This time, I touch on our trip over the top of the midwest on our way to Niagara Falls. When I plan a trip, I look at our old-school spiral-bound atlas to determine the best route between places. This time, as we left northern Wisconsin for Niagara Falls, we had a choice to go south or north. One of our favorite spots when we lived in Wisconsin was the shore of Lake Superior so our decision was made - we would go north. A few nights in Herbster, WI, across the UP to Munising and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, then

down through Michigan to Cleveland before finishing our trip in Niagara Falls, New York.

Herbster is a tiny little town on the southern shore of Lake Superior. Nothing much but scenery and fishing, but the lakeshore is spectacular. And, since the campground is on the shore, views are never-ending. We spent two nights here relaxing, swimming and swatting black flies. But, the sunsets - gorgeous!

Next stop for three nights - Munising, Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula. Chosen for the distance between spots, we were pleasantly surprised at the wonderful things to do and see. Numerous waterfalls, museums and eateries gave us lots of options for the time spent here. We chose to do a cruise of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore which is a "must do", in my opinion. The stories behind the cliff shapes was interesting and the scenery from the

water was beyond compare. You will have to forgive the many photos of the Pictured Rocks, I have many more saved! We also drove up the shoreline to Grand Marais, MI - home to the Shipwreck Museum which houses the bell from the Edmund Fitzgerald. We had fresh whitefish (a Lake Superior delicacy) and some downtime at the RV - a nice few days!

A quick stop at a Harvest Host stop near Lansing (a great apple orchard) and we were on our way to Cleveland. From there, we traveled to Canton (the NFL Hall of Fame), to J.M. Smuckers (of jam and jelly fame), the largest antique mall we've ever seen and the home used for the iconic Christmas movie, A Christmas Story. We even spent time sunning ourselves on the shore of Lake Erie.

These short intermissions in travel are the stuff we love! Fun to plan, fun to visit and fun to share!
