The temple is located in Rome. The structure was built by emperor Hadrian. It is believed that the purpose of the temple was dedicated to all Roman Gods. The temple was and currently is used as a church. The historic center was given to Pope Boniface in the year 608 AD and used to honor St. Mary and the Martyrs. I was quite confused about the hole at the top and center of the dome which does allow weather to get inside but the design of the structure was made strategically with very hidden drains in the floor. I also learned that on April 21st, which is the day celebrated as Rome’s birthday, the sun shines through the hole at the center onto the doors of the Pantheon. I also learned another interesting fact that the height from the floor to the oculus and the diameter of the dome is the same distance, both at 43.2 meters. The meaning behind this is that the inside is perfectly sphere, symbolizing a sacred place. The dome of the Pantheon was known to be the largest in the world for over 1300 years. The Pantheon was used as a site of burial. The people who made an impact on France, were honored by being buried at the Patheon. Those selected were originally limited to men and then in 1995 that perimeter was broke and the first female was buried. Her contributions to radioactivity qualified her for the honor. Many French writers, philosophers and filmmakers were buried for their contributions to art and culture. Some of the people honored were Victor Hugo of Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame fame, Alexandre Dumas, Jean Jacques Rosseau, Voltaire and Emile Zola. Some of these names from the list sounded so familiar to me.
