The Bastille, as the home of the French Revolution, symbolizes the French monarchy. After the mob stormed the Bastille and took control, the revolutionary government destroyed the fortress. As I stood in the Bastille, surrounded by the cobblestone walls outlining the remains of the Bastille, I imagined the day. I thought about the feelings of the angry mob as they invaded. I thought about the people in the prison. I thought about the turmoil leading up to the invasion. I even thought about the soldiers who broke their duties to join the mob of invasion. I tried to put this day in the perspective of King Louis XVI, yet it was difficult for me to understand the absolutism style he led with. As this seems to be a day of celebration, I could not help but feel the emotions of the French people and their frustration as they were led by such a demanding King.
