Fort Saint Nicolas, located in Marseille was built under King Louis XIV between 1660 and 1664. The purpose of it was to defend the city’s port. In 1660, Louis XIV ordered for the troops to be deployed. During the King’s visit to the location of Abbaye Saint-Victor, the construction began for the build. The construction timeframe shocked many people given the challenges they faced with the size of the outlines and the natural obstacles. They considered the build record timing in only four years. In the 18th century the site’s purpose was changed to a military prison and garrisoned. In 1790, during the French Revolution, the people of Marseille sacked Fort Saint Nicholas but a quick month later, the Assemblée Nationale ended the destruction. The people saw suspicion of the threat of the Fort and began to destroy the structure. The restoration was completed in the early 19th century. The Fort was divided into two parts by the route of the new Boulevard Charles Livon.
