In the center of Paris, where the Bastille was located, and home to the storming of the Bastille. It was built with a purpose of protecting the eastern border of Paris from the English during the Hundred Years' War. The storming of the Bastille was significant in the start of the French Revolution. In 1789, the east side of Paris was attacked by a mob. The state prison, which was symbolic of the monarchy’s dictatorial rule. The monarchy was then overthrown, and a republic was built surrounding the ideas of liberty, equality, and brotherhood. I learned that this important moment in history is celebrated in France every year as a national holiday.
