Failing Grocery Store 101

The house is gorgeous but other than two bottles of water, there is nothing in the kitchen. I decide it's time to go to the grocery store. Into the car with the Boy -- using the new GPS -- we embark. What ensues is an hour of searching and not finding the grocery store. However, the Boy notices that when you get lost you draw amazing things on the GPS screen. Here is an incredible electric blue penis my boy captured. So Proud!

Finally, the next day we made it to the grocery store. It is full of delightful things. The Spanish love their cured meat. Especially popular is Jamon Iberco (cured pork leg). We spent a great deal of time looking at the meat. We also relished the many many Kinder Eggs. These chocolate eggs with a tiny surprise are, of course, completely illegal in the US. Choking Hazard.

When we arrive at the checkout, the friendly cashier speaks no English. He is refusing to sell me the kiwis, bananas, and plums I have bagged and pulled from the shelf. (Already, it had taken us 20 minutes to figure out how to get a shopping cart. The Boy determined that to unlock the chained carts one must put in a coin to release the desired cart. One Fanta purchase later we had the coin and had the cart!) Exhausted from The Great Shopping Effort, I am dismayed when the cashier puts the fruit to the side. Later I will learn that to buy fruit in Spain at El Supermercado one must enter the Tecla (key code) and pesar (weigh) the item to determine the price before arriving at check out. No fruit for us today.

But success. One blue penis and 4 hours later we return to the house stocked with food. Day One is in the Bag.
