4 Unique accommodations in Southwest Portugal

Sun, sea, beach, delicious food, and affordable stays attract visitors to the southwest coast of Portugal all year round. Between Lagos on the southern coast and Sines on the western coast lies the Costa Vicentina, a protected and stunning natural area. Along the coastline, small fishing villages with white houses and orange roofs are scattered. I hiked from Lagos to Sines in ten days, staying in accommodations along the coast. These are my four favorites.

PORTUGAL

1. Salema Eco Camp

Salema Eco Camp, just outside the charming coastal village of Salema, is located in the Costa Vicentina Natural Park. The founder and staff are dedicated to preserving this stunning coastal area, designing the park to be as sustainable as possible. At the time of writing, it is not only the first but also the only fully carbon-neutral hotel in the Algarve.

They offer camping spots, glamping tents, and studios—ranging from dome tents to tipis to safari tents. The glamping accommodations and studios are fully equipped and still affordable. You can book yoga classes, shop in the eco-store, and, of course, enjoy wonderful beach walks (just a 5-minute drive away). In the evening, you can fall asleep in your comfortable bed to the sound of owls calling from the trees.

2. Baluarte da Vila Apartments in Lagos

Want to explore the lively town of Lagos? Stay at this Airbnb with a swimming pool. The apartment is located in a quiet and well-maintained complex. The friendly receptionist gives you a warm welcome and plenty of tips about the area.

From the dining table in the apartment, you have a view of the pool, where you can float in the sun. The bathroom features a typical Portuguese design, and the beds in the bedroom are wonderfully comfortable. If you leave the curtains open, the morning sun will gently wake you—no alarm clock needed.

From this apartment, you can visit these five must-sees in Lagos.

3. HI Arrifana Destination Hostel

Just a few minutes' walk from the beach, HI Arrifana Destination Hostel is located in the charming coastal village of Arrifana. This modern hostel has everything you need, including a sun deck for yoga and a coworking space with stunning ocean views. It's the perfect place to combine remote work, surfing, hiking, and beach sunbathing.

The on-site restaurant serves burgers so delicious that guests are still talking about them three days later. They also offer vegetarian and vegan options, and the bar is a great place to socialize with fellow travelers. In addition to dorm rooms, private rooms are also available.

4. Bohemian Antique Guesthouse in Odeceixe

The Bohemian Antique Guesthouse in Odeceixe is one of the most intimate and stylish hostels I’ve ever stayed in. The common area is beautifully decorated with antique furniture and cozy armchairs, while large windows overlook the charming center of this peaceful village.

The terrace belongs to the neighboring restaurant, Ao Largo, where you can enjoy an affordable meal, including delicious vegan options for lunch and dinner—not to mention the amazing cakes!

You can rent the private room "The Med Mez" or book a bed in the dormitory "The Four Fox Trot," where curtains provide both privacy and a luxurious feel. Plus, Odeceixe Beach is one of the most stunning on the west coast.
