In spring, a special tribute to the flower is held on Madeira during the Flower Festival. During this festival, various activities are organized daily, putting flowers in the spotlight. The inhabitants of Madeira have a long tradition of making flower carpets, which were originally used to decorate religious processions. The flower carpets are now an indispensable part of the Flower Festival and attract many visitors because of their refined beauty and attention to detail.
For flower enthusiasts who do not know much about these beautiful plants yet, the local flower market in Madeira is an absolute must-see. Here you can get acquainted with the many different types of flowers and decorations, and receive explanations from enthusiastic locals. Moreover, there are plenty of stalls where you can enjoy the local cuisine and traditional drinks. And if you love photography, you will certainly enjoy the picturesque surroundings, which provide a colorful backdrop for your camera.
The absolute highlight of the Flower Festival in Madeira is without a doubt the Flower Parade. This event is as exotic and colorful as the carnival in Brazil, with people wearing the most beautiful costumes adorned with real flowers. The parade consists of the most elaborately decorated floats, accompanied by matching music blaring from the speakers. The parade takes place on April 30th from 4:00 pm in Funchal, the capital of the island.
