Believe it or not, but there is a paradise island in Europe often called the Hawaii of Europe: Madeira. This Portuguese island, located in the Atlantic Ocean, is not only known for its spectacular views and pristine beaches, nominated as Europe's most beautiful, but also for its unparalleled abundance of flowers. In spring, especially between April 27 and May 21, Madeira celebrates the Flower Festival: a tribute to spring. A festival that you want to put on your bucket list!

The Flower Festival in Madeira

Madeira is an island known for its lush flora and perfect climate for flowers. Whether you stroll through the parks or drive along the roadside, you are surrounded by a sea of colorful flowers everywhere. It is therefore not surprising that the island is considered one large botanical garden.

In spring, a special tribute to the flower is held on Madeira during the Flower Festival. During this festival, various activities are organized daily, putting flowers in the spotlight. The inhabitants of Madeira have a long tradition of making flower carpets, which were originally used to decorate religious processions. The flower carpets are now an indispensable part of the Flower Festival and attract many visitors because of their refined beauty and attention to detail.

The local flower market

For flower enthusiasts who do not know much about these beautiful plants yet, the local flower market in Madeira is an absolute must-see. Here you can get acquainted with the many different types of flowers and decorations, and receive explanations from enthusiastic locals. Moreover, there are plenty of stalls where you can enjoy the local cuisine and traditional drinks. And if you love photography, you will certainly enjoy the picturesque surroundings, which provide a colorful backdrop for your camera.

The Flower Parade

The absolute highlight of the Flower Festival in Madeira is without a doubt the Flower Parade. This event is as exotic and colorful as the carnival in Brazil, with people wearing the most beautiful costumes adorned with real flowers. The parade consists of the most elaborately decorated floats, accompanied by matching music blaring from the speakers. The parade takes place on April 30th from 4:00 pm in Funchal, the capital of the island.

Madeira is worth a visit all year round

n addition to the Flower Festival, the island offers beautiful gardens and parks throughout the year. For example, visit the Botanical Garden, Monte Palace Garden, and Santa Catarina Park for an impressive mix of exotic plants, flowers, and monuments. For a panoramic view over the Atlantic Ocean and a garden full of flower and plant species from around the world, Belmond Reid’s Palace is the perfect place. If you haven't had enough of gardens yet, you can also visit the unique Dragon Trees Nucleus Garden.
