Notre Dame is hauntingly beautiful because of the Gothic style. When I first saw the church I was so in awe. The individual carvings and effort it took to build it was incredible. In the U.S we don't have churches or buildings that took years to build and create. It was spectacular to experience Notre Dame as our first excursion. We learned how it was a symbol of the medieval culture of France. It represented the old ideas and culture of Paris in a time period that new ideas were emerging. It also represented the religious beliefs about creating buildings and churches in honor of God.
In Ruskin's seven points he talks about how the architecture must coincide with the culture of the time period. I believe that Notre Dame was built and represented the old beliefs of that time period. As Paris went through reconstruction there was a lot of conflict between the old ideas and the new. Ruskin also talks about how the builders must use materials that are created by humans. The architecture style to create Notre Dame could only be created my human craftsmanship and tools that aren't machines. The style of the building could never be recreated with machines that were the hands of humans.
