The Cape Point Lighthouse was built in the late 1950s, positioned on top of cliffs overlooking the sea. However, it sat too high up, and the beam was often obscured by rain, fog, and inclement weather.
In 1911, the Lusitania ran into Bellows Rock, just below the lighthouse, and sank. The lighthouse was decommissioned and another was built, closer to the sea.
