Boulders Beach is a protected beach made up of inlets between granite boulders. It is popular due to a colony of African penguins that settled there in 1982.

From just a single pair, the colony has grown to over 3,000 birds in recent years.

They were previously referred to as Jackass Penguins because of a braying sound they make.
