Situated above the city center, Bo-Kaap is one of the oldest residential areas of Cape Town. Its residents are descendants of slaves imported by the Dutch from Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, and other African countries during the 16th and 17th centuries. The slaves were called Cape Malays. In 1805, slavery was abolished and religious freedoms were granted. The emancipated slaves formed the community at Bo-Kaap.
The residents painted their houses vivid colors to celebrate freedom and identity, collaborating with others so not to use clashing colors.
