We received a tip that if we traveled north, we had a better chance of spotting a sea turtle. Our first stop was Kahekili Beach in Lahaina. Wow! What an amazing place! We haven't been out snorkeling yet, but this is definitely the place to do that. The beach itself is awesome (although the sand is burn-your-feet hot), and the fish are everywhere.
Afterwards we went to Duke's Beach House for lunch. The huli huli chicken was really good and Bill's steak tacos were also quite tasty.
We still hadn't seen any sea turtles though, and the waiter informed us we should go even further north. So we drove to a beach in Kapalua, but it was rather icky. Once again, dangerous shore break signs and red flags were posted, and the beach was just dirty-looking. Not the soft white sand we were used to. We poked around the rocks for a bit, but there was nothing of interest, so we didn't stay long.
After searching on the Internet for awhile, we drove to Napili Bay, where reviewers on TripAdvisor said we were sure to see some sea turtles. Napili Bay is a sandy beach with great swimming and snorkeling, and just around the bend is an area of black lava rocks which is apparently a popular feeding ground for sea turtles.
I really think we must be going at the wrong time of day. Although the lava rock field was neat, there weren't any turtles there. So far the only turtle we've seen is one on the first day we arrived. We went out onto the lanai and saw either a sting ray or a turtle (we're not sure which), with someone walking along the shore trying to keep pace with it. So we made the mistake of thinking that they must be easy to find. Apparently not.
We're trying to book a shore-based snorkel tour so that we increase our likelihood of not only seeing a sea turtle, but also swimming with one. The weather over the next couple of days may be a bit dicey though thanks to Tropical Storm Niala.
On the way back, we picked up some ice cream mochi from the grocery store (yay!) and got caught in Maui rush hour. Nothing that a dip in the pool followed by a soak in the jacuzzi won't fix!
