Bill, like a banana, does not travel well. Due to his self-described "grumbly tummy", we stayed close to our condo again today.
Before he woke, I went for an early morning stroll along the beach. Toward the south end is the Kihei Canoe Club. This is my favorite spot along Sugar Beach, as the waves crash hardest here and the slope is steeper. I watched and waited a good long while until a group of canoes were launched. Timing is everything when it comes to launching a canoe in the ocean! I don't think this is an activity Bill and I will be partaking in though. They don't exactly maintain what I would call a "leisurely" pace.
After breakfast, we walked down to the Sugar Beach Bake Shop and farmer's market. I was looking for some manapua (steamed pork buns) and malasadas (sugary, no-hole doughnuts). Although the bakery did not have manapua, they did have custard-filled malasadas. Apparently they are only made fresh on the weekends, and though the ones we bought were tasty, I imagine they taste much better straight out of the oven. We may have to go back on Saturday.
At the farmer's market, we sampled some coconut, pineapple, different types of mango, and what may be my new favorite fruit - lilikoi, otherwise known as yellow passion fruit. It's eaten by cutting it in half and scooping out the seeds and pulp. It's both sweet and sour, which just happens to be my favorite flavor combination. Even though Bill wasn't a fan, I did purchase some lilikoi cream cheese, and am really looking forward to breakfast!
Before lunch we took a dip in the pool and a soak in the hot tub. After lunch, we had our first "swim" in the Pacific Ocean, or rather, I got pummeled by waves in the Pacific Ocean. You learn quickly not to stand where the waves break! I don't think I've had that much sand in my bathing suit since I was 10, and I'm still scratching it out of my hair.
In the afternoon, I sampled some of the homemade mai tai I'd made the day before. Very tasty, but I think it may need a touch more rum. ;)
