Well, my time in Rome is complete! I'm a bit torn--sad to be leaving this beautiful city, but also looking forward to the next chapter in Siena. I have loved my time here. This post is simply a recap of the facebook posts that I've done along the way, so if you've been following those this will be review--I am simply putting it here for posterity's sake. :)
The Apartment and Neighbourhood I have mixed feelings about this Airbnb. My room is great--spacious and pleasant, with my own little balcony overlooking a courtyard, and AC to boot. The household... not so much. It's full of a bunch of long-term residents who are too young to know how to take care of things or clean up after themselves. The bathrooms and kitchen are constantly damp and dirty. My first morning here I had to unclog and scrub the bathtub just to take a shower. I also had to buy TP because they will literally let it get down to zero without buying any. It's like living with a bunch of college students. But that aside, the neighbourhood is fantastic. We are near Tiburtina and Pietralata stations. It is a quiet and safe area, with just enough activity to be interesting, not so much to be noisy. There is excellent food everywhere. I have my favourite cafes and have tried at least half a dozen pizzerias nearby. I can walk to the Metro and be in the historic Centre quickly and easily. I would definitely stay in this neighbourhood again, just maybe not in this particular Airbnb.
Best Things I Did While Here
* Capuchin Crypts - Sacred art made out of human bones. Creepy, mystical, fascinating, humbling.
* The Aqueducts Park - My birthday treat to myself. I loved this park and am glad I did the guided tour so that I could get the historic tidbits. But next time I'll just take a picnic lunch and a book or a friend and hang out in the sunset like the locals do. :)
* The Palatine - This was my second time to the Palatine, since I had been there on my first visit in 2006. One of my favourite places in Rome. Gardens, palatial ruins, and some of the best views in the city. Need I say more?
* KAYAKING AND SWIMMING IN A FREAKING VOLCANO!!!! This was by far the highlight of my month. How can I top this?!
* Borghese Villa and Gallery - I'm glad I did this at the end of my trip, because I'm leaving with fresh memories of some absolutely incredible and moving art.
* All of the fountains, cool buildings, wandering the streets randomly.
* And of course the food. I don't need to explain that. :)
