Today we visited the Thames Valley Police Headquarters. We had to take the train from Reading to Oxford to Oxford Parkway. Thames Valley is a county in England. Each county has its own police service. Thames Valley is broken into three districts: Oxfordshire, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire. The headquarters are located in Oxfordshire, and the Reading station I went to on Monday is in Berkshire. Our first presentation was from a forensic analyst. I knew most of what her was saying, but I was very surprised that they send all of their DNA evidence to the private sector to be tested. Each district has a lab, and the headquarters has a lab, but none of them are equipped to test DNA. Connie from Monday told me that forensic scientists get paid very little in the UK, especially compared to America. The second presentation was from three members of the Major Crime Unit. They handle murder, and missing persons. There are 2.1 million people in Thames Valley. In 2016, there were 20 murders. In 2017, there were 12. And in 2019, there were 11 murders. For comparison, Fairfax County VA has a population of 1.1 million people, and there were 19 murders in 2017. The Thames Valley Police number seems very low, especially in such a highly populated area. After major crimes, we broke for lunch. When we returned, we received two great presentations on economic crimes. First by a Detective Inspector, and then by a Detective Sergeant. (Inspector is higher than sergeant.) They deal with organized crime, money laundering, bribery, and election crimes. We then took the train from Oxford Parkway to Oxford. Some students returned to Reading, but a few of us stayed in Oxford for dinner. We visited Oxford University and the Oxford Castle and Prison. We had dinner and gelato before returning to Reading.
