Europe - Salzburg

Day 3 - Salzburg, Austria, 08.16.2018

Today's Garmin Step Mileage: 12.6 km
Bike tour : 16 km

Today we scheduled a bicycle tour of the Sound of Music in Salzburg - Fräulein Maria's Bike Tours. Fräulein Maria’s Bicycle Tour takes you to over 20 of the locations which were used in our favourite movie. The tour starts at Mirabellplatz, where we got a two-wheeled friend for the next 3.5 hours of being shown our favourite things.

After crossing the Salzach River, we ventured into the old town, where we pass the Horse pond, the Horse riding school and cycle around the cathedral. After a short stroll through St. Peter’s cemetery, we cycled (actually pushed) our bikes up the hill to the fortress and then onto Nonnberg Abbey.

From there we have a fantastic view of Salzburg and its marvellous mountains. An easy descent brings us down and a short ride takes us to the “Leopoldskron Palace” and its beautiful lake.

Our path now leads us through a traditional Austrian residential area and farmland to the Hellbrunner Allee, where we stop off at the Trapp Family residence, “Frohnburg Palace”. At the end of the Allee, the Gazebo awaits and a stroll around the beautiful Hellbrunn Gardens.

In less than an hour we were back in town and we pass by the Mirabell Gardens, before the tour ends at our meeting point at Mirabellplatz.

Our guide Leo was fantastic, right down to the singing along the way. He was very knowledgeable about the Sound of Music locations, as well as, many the history of Salzburg. What an amazing tour.

After a full day of touring we decided to track down a place that our host recommended. It is a monastery that brews their own beer -

Augustinerbrau-Kloster Mulln. The beer gardens were amazing and the largest we have been to yet. Not only do they serve their own beer, they also serve a variety of food. A place that everyone should visit if they come to Salzburg.

At the foot of the Mönchsberg, in Salzburg’s Mülln neighbourhood, beer has been brewed and then enjoyed amongst social circles since 1621. With an indoor seating area of 5.000 m2, the Bräustübl tavern and Brewery is Austria’s largest and boasts a further 1400 seats in the outdoor beer garden.

The beer is drawn from wooden barrels and served in stone jugs, or steins. Regional and traditional dishes can be bought directly from various food stands in the "Schmankerlgang" (Delicatessen arcade) which is set up to resemble a traditional marketplace.

The Bräustübl is a well-respected traditional meeting place – a piece of living history in the world heritage centre of Salzburg. The Augustinian Bräu brews its beer in accordance with the purity law (1516) and is made by hand of just malt, water, hops and yeast, and is completely free of preservatives.

Typical wooden barrels are the hallmark of the brewing culture. They are filled and available in a variety of sizes (15, 20 or 50 litres). The most popular beers we serve are:
Märzen, Fastenbier (Lenten Beer served between Ash Wednesday and Easter) and Bockbier (November and December).
