Europe - Fussen

Day 1 - Fussen, 08.25.2018

It is our last morning in Lindau before we headed east to Fussen. It has been so nice to stay in a historical hotel and see the charm of the wood timbers in the walls and the unique walls as they were built many years ago - not a straight wall in the place.

It has been nice to have breakfasts provided by the hotels in the last couple of stays. It takes the guess work out of what to have and cook when you are only in a place for 2-3 days. However, I really do like the variety of having a AirBnB alternated with a hotel stay along the way when we travel. The AirBnB is nice in that you can make meals

how, when and what you want. It also gives you the freedom to go out for a nice meal when you want to, as well as, the accommodation often is a bit less expensive than the hotel options that are available in Europe in the summer months. I honestly think that in the last 2 hotels I have eaten them out of salmon locks in the morning. Forget the eggs when you can have fish for breakfast! I know it is not many people's first choice, but for me it is a nice change from the usual protein and carb breakfast.

We headed out to Fussen after breakfast and one last stroll through town. Being a Saturday, we stumbled across a local farmers market in the centre of town. We loaded up on olives, stuffed peppers and their local spreads to have on our road trip. When travelling we try to keep off the main Autobahn enjoying a bit more of the countryside. Sometimes along the Autobahn there are road improvements and construction going on, making things very slow (very much like our road ways in the summer). But when you get a stretch along the way that is 3 lanes each way and no construction, just sit back and watch the cars zip past you in the far left lane. Man do they fly by. I think that at one time there was and Audi that passed us going about 160-170 km/hr. Wow!

As we got closer to Fussen the Autobahn speed signs start to post speed limits of 100, 60, 50, 40, all due to increasing vehicular traffic. It wasn't until we were about 15 km from Fussen did we encounter the heavy traffic. Luckily we didn't have far to go before the turn off to

town. Fussen is not far from the Austria border so it backs up from those travelling to Austria as well. Glen once told us that Fussen and the castle traffic is like going to Disneyland in the summer months. He was not far off from that either.

Fussen is a charming Bavarian town at the end (or beginning) of the Romantic Road. Just about everyone passes through here on their way to Neuschwanstein Castle, but most don’t stop to see what it’s all about. We picked Füssen as one of our overnight stops while on our road trip, and I’m so glad we did. While the town is small, we discovered a few hidden gems that the majority of visitors undoubtedly miss. We found our HomeAway rental and got checked in without difficulty. It is a larger one-bedroom apartment about 10 min walk from the old town square. Very comfortable and a large space.

HomeAway Accommodations: $144.00 Euros for 2 nights

With some time left in the day we did some wandering around Fussen a bit. Many of the town is pedestrian only and the cobblestone roads twist and turn in all sorts of directions. Another quaint little Bavarian town. If it wasn't for the castles and museum in the area I think that the town would be just a small hiccup of a place. But with the castle and tourism the place is bursting at the seams with people and tour busses everywhere. It reminds me of a small scale Banff in the summer months. I am glad that people are taking the time to see this beautiful part of the world.

Well tomorrow is a big tourist day, with 2 castle visits and loads of fun in-between. Off to kick up for the rest of the night.
