Ships log day 18 Continued

In the Panama Canal, 22.01.2017

In the Panama Canal today. Travelled 5500 miles. Gym and swim yesterday 280 calories 40 mins. There must be some Germans on board as i found a towel on the walking machine this morning and naturally I took it off. A couple of facts I found interesting about the Canal 6000 people died working on it from snake bites alone, as they carved thier way through the rainforest. It takes 12 hours to travel through it, and it costs the big container ships $450,000 to use it each way. It joins the Pacific to the Atlantic and saves 5000 miles off the old route round the cape. On deck at dawn and heard the dawn chorus of the rainforest. So much excitement in the ship as everyone on deck to witness us enter the canal with only a couple off feet either side and all the sounds of monkeys and birds coming from the forest on both sides almost worth the fair just for this one morning.
