Leuven, the proud home of Belgium’s oldest university, celebrates 600 years as a university city in 2025. Since 1425, the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) has been the beating heart of the city, where knowledge, science and innovation come together against a backdrop of impressive Gothic architecture and charming city squares. This anniversary year is the perfect moment to (re)discover Leuven with a city break full of culture, history, and Flemish conviviality. We’ve listed a few tips to help you make the most of your trip.

Be inspired by the new art and science trail

One of the highlights you won’t want to miss during your visit to Leuven is the brand-new art and science trail. Launching on 17 May 2025, this new route will become a permanent and free feature of Leuven’s cultural offering—even after the anniversary year. The open-air trail connects art and science at surprising locations throughout the city. The standout feature is undoubtedly the Wandering Garden in Arenberg Park, an intriguing labyrinth created by artist duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh (both KU Leuven alumni). This artistic, green maze invites visitors to get lost in a world of knowledge and imagination, offering an inspiring meeting place in the city where you can stroll and unwind.

Take a look behind the scenes of the university’s heritage

For the first time in its rich history, KU Leuven is opening up its academic heritage to the wider public. During this anniversary year, visitors have a unique opportunity every weekend (on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 to 12:00) to go behind the scenes in some of Leuven’s historic university buildings. From majestic lecture halls to hidden inner courtyards, this heritage tour—led by an expert guide—takes you to the most beautiful heritage sites and gives you fascinating insights into the university’s academic past.

Step into the Harry Potter atmosphere at the University Library

The all-time favourite among visitors to Leuven? The University Library! This iconic building is located on the Ladeuzeplein, in the heart of the city. The impressive reading room, with its wooden panelling and tall windows, evokes strong Harry Potter vibes for many. It’s also one of the few places in the city where you can actually see KU Leuven students studying, as most other university libraries are not open to visitors.

Fancy enjoying a 360-degree view over Leuven and not put off by a (small) climb? Then take on the 289 steps of the Library Tower. Along the way, you’ll learn more about the building’s turbulent history—it was destroyed and rebuilt during both World Wars. Once you reach the balcony, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view over the Flemish city. An absolute must-see!

Admire Leuven’s top sights

In addition to the university, Leuven has plenty of other must-see attractions for your city break. Be sure to add the stately Town Hall on the Grote Markt to your list—this impressive building is a true Gothic masterpiece. Surrounding the Town Hall, you’ll find a vibrant mix of charming shops, cosy cafés and excellent restaurants, so there’s no chance of getting bored.

Head south of the city centre and wander through the atmospheric streets, gardens and parks of the centuries-old Great Beguinage (Groot Begijnhof). Then, escape the hustle and bustle of the city and unwind in Belgium’s oldest botanical garden, the Kruidtuin. Founded by the University of Leuven in 1738 for its medical students, this peaceful haven still delights plant and herb enthusiasts every day.

Taste the best of Leuven

Discovering Leuven isn’t just a feast for the eyes—it’s one for the taste buds too. The city is packed with cosy cafés, lively terraces, and restaurants. From international cuisine to authentic Flemish classics, there’s something to suit every palate. Don’t forget to try a locally brewed beer—perhaps from the famous city brewery Stella Artois, or from smaller breweries like De Coureur or De Vlier.

The Old Market Square (Oude Markt), often dubbed “the longest bar in Europe,” remains a classic spot to raise a glass to a successful city break. But you’ll also find plenty of culinary gems tucked away in hidden alleyways and up-and-coming neighbourhoods like the Vaartkom—from Michelin-starred restaurants to trendy coffee bars and budget-friendly eateries.
