I managed to get up before 6 this morning so Naomi and I could go on a sunset hike to the highschool in Somosomo, it was a full day. We were going to the highschool to serve food to the students staying in the dorms. Tua, Loi Sandy, baby Hope, Mahi, Naomi, baby Sam and I took a boat to the village of Somosomo and Naomi and I got out and hiked up a mountain and back down to the school. It was an intense hike, the trail had been partially destroyed by a hurricane, the students missed school for a week following the hurricane until the villages came together and decided to clear the path. There was still a lot of damage and I couldn't imagine doing it twice a day, five days out of the week. When we finally got to the school, some of the boys were still eating breakfast, I introduced myself and about 3 awkward marriage proposals and a lot of side comments in Fijian later, I was ready to go find Naomi again. We went down to a teacher's house to get started on lunch, I grated garlic, Naomi cut green beans and the rest of the women cut vegetables and chicken too. When we had finished cooking, we followed the guys out to the levu (ground oven) which is made by diggig a hole in the sand, lighting a fire inside it until it'svery hot and then burrying food wrapped in leaves until it's cooked. Once we had all the food, we went back to the dining hall and we all ate. Afterwards, one of the girls showed me the girls dorm. There were 14 girls Years 9-13 (in Fiji highschool goes up to 13th grade). It's $25 a term (3 terms) for a bed and 3 meals a day. After chatting with the girls in teh dorm for a while, I asked Mili, one of the prefects if we could go down to the beach, because their school was barely 200 feet it. As we walked, she told me about what it was like living in the dorm, they went home every 4 weeks, didn't have any curfew and they supervised themselves, though the prefects helped. We ran into some other students and we all hung out on the beach for a while, Mili and I laughed at the painfully awkward boys and I was feeling quite the opposite of nostalgia, really not missing high school. We had all stayed later than intended and now we had to wait for the tide to come back in so we could take the boat back home. After another few hours of walking along the beach and chatting with some new people, we were finally ready to head home, I was exhausted and fell asleep on the boat, which considering the choppy water, was pretty hard to do. But it was a really nice ride, I laid down on my backpack and looked up at the sky and I could see the milky way and the moon and about about a billion stars, I drifted off pretty fast. When we got back home, the family was worried about my legs hurting from walking around all day so naomi gave me a massage after dinner. In Fiji it's pretty typical to massage each other as a family, i thought it was a nice little custom. When it was done, I was so tired I fell asleep almost immediatly.
