My Fijian Adventure

Monday
I woke up exhausted and for a minute I had forgotten what happened during the night. The house felt a little different. not as warm as it was when I first went to sleep. My attitude was different. I got ready for school slowly and I go through a couple hours before I decided to go back home and take a nap. I wasn't feeling good and honestly, I was just kind of upset. I slumped on home and just collapsed into bed, I was still having a hard time sleeping after last night. I had been sound asleep when I felt a breeze on my leg, I rolled over to pull the blanket back on me, but I caught a glance of the reason why the blanket had fallen off. There was a man standing over my bed, he was holding my blanket, we made eye contact and he ran away. It happened so fast,I didn't have time to think about it. As soon as the door slammed behind him, I got up and turned on the light, I was shaking a I went to wake up Naomi and Tua. We locked my doors and Tua went out to see if he could find the man. I spent a couple hours trying to fall asleep, but I was too shaken up. I haven't really figured out what, if anything to do about it yet. I decided to just go to bed early and think about it tomorrow.

Tuesday and Wednesday
I spent a couple days just thinking, I still wasn't feeling very good and unfortunately, I was starting to see the village differently. my walk to school was darker and I didnt feel as safe, a small, 5 second incident had really changed my outlook on Gunu. I was tossing around the idea of going back to the mainland early. I didn't like feeling unsafe and always looking over my shoulder.I learned from NAomi that Gunu is actually a very high crime village and is actually on watch by the police. I was really trying to get out of the funk I was in, but it was tough couple days. by wednesday I was starting to feel better, I told Naomi that I wanted to leave a week early on sunday, she understood, but I felt bad for leaving early.I decided to get the most out of my last few days in the village and I went for a walk and had tea with Laisa and played with the puppies until it got late, I went back home and slept early again.

Thursday
Today the students were finally finished testing and I ran a spelling bee with the year 5 students, we had a great time and the students got nee books as prizes. Master Seru invited me to the meeting of all the Yasawa teachers at the Yasawa High School, I met them at the beach and I took the school boat to Somosomo and walked over to the highschool, I made it by 4:30 and when a few hours went by and the other teachers hasn't shown up yet, i thought maybe I had missed something, I had forgotten to ask what time the meeting was so I was just playing it by ear. around 6, the teachers all showed up, It was dark and I really hadn't thought we were going to be there past sunset, but I had no idea that meeting wouldn't even start until 9pm. it was really late when the meeting finally finished up and I starting asking when the boat was leaving. Imagine my surprise when I found out that it wasn't going back to Gunu until 5am. Clearly there had been a miscommunication, because what I thought was an hour long meeting that let out at 6 ended up being a 2 hour long meeting that let out at 11 and when I was told we were all taking a boat back afterwards, I figured it would be before sunrise. So instead of waiting until morning to go back home, I decided to walk bak with the other teachers, so we set out at 11 at night with a dull torch back to gunu. We started with a vertical incline fro the first couple Kilometers And then downhill on a path that was about half a foot wide, right by a 3 meter drop off down the mountain. Finally we got to Somosomo and took a rest before heading to Nasogo. We all had a drink and then got back on the trail, which lead to a river, which we all walked through, it got up past my knees in some parts, but by the time we were through it, I was laughing so hard about the whole ordeal that I didn't really care. we reached Nasogo and took a rest while everyone caught up and then we went forward with the last leg of our trip to Gunu. We walked another few Kilometers and Finally made it back to gunu by 1am. By the time i finally got home, I was covered in a nice mixture of mud, seawater and sweat, so even though it was pitch dark and incredibly windy, I took a cold shower and shivered my way through it. I finally got to bed around 2am and I fell asleep dreading having to wake up again in 5 hours.

Friday
I was late to school today because I overslept. I had breakfast and then walked over to my last day. I said my goodbyes to all the teachers and did a spelling bee with the year 7 students and then walked home from school for the last time. I took a rest and then went for a walk through the village, as usual, the longer I walked the more children tagged along, we walked to Nasogo and back and then we all sang songs on the beach. They looked at pictures of my family and one of them asked if my sister was Elsa from Let It Go because of her light hair, I explained that she was in fact Elsa and they were all amazed. When It started getting dark, the children all went home and I went for dinner. it was potato and egg soup with donuts. Since I was up late last night, I went to bed early tonight.
