I woke up this morning ready to have a relaxing day after a week of school, but after breakfast, Tua said that there was a boat going out to see the manta rays in a few minutes. So I got ready and ran out to catch the boat. It was a big group, 2 younger boys who were in my Year 4 class last week, 3 guys that were there to go fishing and, a woman from thailand, women from Portugal and a woman from the US. We drove for about an hour, out past Botaira, all the way to Manta Ray resort. We all got in the water and started snorkeling around. The snorkeling wasn't great, but I did see a shark. We moved to a new spot and I saw an eel poking out of a rock,I watched it hunt and dart at fish for a while and then moved on. I found a shell I liked and dove down to get i, but as i reached out my hand, something else darted out at me. I snatched my hand back and looked out to see another eel with its mouth open, staring at me, I took one look at its lovely, sharp teeth and swam away. I got bac in the boat and took a mini break. We stopped again and I got out, the waves were pretty hard and the current was taking me pretty far away from the boat, I actually couldn't see it anymore, but I wasn't going to worry yet. I kept exploring the reef and I sawa boat propeller, I thought it might be useful but, it was pretty heavy so i left it and just made a mental note of where it was. I found the boat and got back in, or rather was lifted back in. I asked if they could see a boat propeller and so we went back to get it, I felt useful and the guys seemed excited about it too, apparently it was a good one. We drove over to Siri, one of the guys who had gone fishing. He had caught at least 20 fish in about 45 minutes. We stopped for a while to eat lunch, it was coconut rice with corn beef and noodles. I got out to see how they spear fish in Fiji. I followed Siti around while he aimed and missed a few times, I saw another shark and I wondered if he was going to try and spear it, to be quite honest, considering his aim, I was a little nervous he was just going to piss one off. However, he started getting better, he wounded a couple and then handed me the line with all of the fish hooked on, it was surprisingly heavy, but I was having a good time watching him throw the spear at fish and the fish then spazzing out and hightailing it the hell outta there. He had started catching fish and we had gotten a good system down, he would dive down spear a fish and then hand it to me and I would string it onto the line. We saw another shark and Siti swam towards it, I watched as he aimed right for it and then threw the spear right at it. He missed, by a lot, turned out i was at a weird angle and he actually nailed fish pretty good, I strung it along and we kept hunting. I was enjoying the silence of the ocean and as I was watching Siti dive down and launch a spear at fish, I thought about how how we looked from the point of view of the fish. 2 giant creatures, one with a long needle that he launched at its prey and the other dragging along a string of dead bodies. It was pretty morbid, but kind of awesome. We were seeing lots of sharks, only about 2 to 3 feet each, and I followed a few of them for a minute or two and they were pretty fun to watch, right until I looked right down and saw one making a beeline right towards me. I froze a bit, but it turned when it was a couple feet away from me, it turned in such a way that i got a full view of its eyes, teeth, fins and the little fish that was cleaning it. We started swimming back to the boat, but it was a against the current and the fish were really heavy, I was starting to get out of breath and way behind, I powered through and managed to keep about 10 feet behind Siti. Finally we caught up tp the boat and it was time to go back home. The ride home was almost too relaxing and by the time I get home, I almost fell asleep in the shower.
