Augustus becomes the first emperor of Rome in 27 BC and assumes sole authority, eliminating any balance of power that existed. There is a reconfiguration of power as Augustus takes on both the political and the religious spheres. When considered together, the two most famous statues of Augustus as Pontius Maximus and Prima Porta give viewers a more comprehensive view of his role as emperor. Augustus as Pontius Maximus, found in the Museo Nationale Romano di Palazzo Massimo, depicts Augustus in the robes of the Pontifus Maximus and encourages viewers to see Augustus as the bridge between God and man. Augustus of Prima Porta, found in the Musei Vaticani, depicts Augustus in both a toga and armors with Cupid by his leg. This shows viewers that with the power of the army, Augustus will protect the people of Rome. Cupid is used to make a statement about Augustus as being descended from the divine (Venus). This idea of Augustus as a deity is also evident by his lack of shoes. These pieces are used together as propaganda to tell the people that Augustus is everything in one man. He brings multiple offices together and acts as a politician, a military leader, and a priest. Propaganda builds solidarity around a community, which is what Augustus was trying to accomplish.
