Rome 2019

Rome has had a long and complex history, but certain themes have been present throughout it all. Since Rome’s beginning with the Etruscans, it has been heavily influenced by the Greeks. This influence continued throughout antiquity as the Romans copied their Greek counterparts in both art and society. The Greek religion was at the center of Roman life, so they renamed deities and made it their own. The use of propaganda has also been present throughout Rome’s history. Together the various statues of Augustus portray him so that a particular idea is conveyed. Trajan’s Column, the Arch of Constantine, and the Colossus of Constantine are all used as political propaganda to show why Trajan and Constantine respectively should have power and influence. Vatican City also uses propaganda. Its grandeur and masterful design is used to illustrate its power and influence. Once Christianity took hold in Rome after being legally recognized by Constantine, Greek influences were still present in both art and architecture as can be seen in Raphael’s School of Athens. As Rome progressed through time, it continued to acknowledge its history and founding. Every group that came to power in Rome tried to appropriate ancient Rome as their history to rally support from its citizens. This was done using the various art and artifacts seen in Rome.
