Today is our final full day here. Our wonderful hosts prepared a great breakfast with some great local products. They are really connected to their community. Everything had a story. The eggs came from Luke, a boy who cuddles his hens. The bread came from a local baker. The granola came from a local producer that has just branched out to global distribution. We also got some great advice of places to check out in the area.
We started off at a National Trust site that isn't really advertised at all. It is a historic fishing village, still occupied, with walking paths all around it. We found a path to the beach, and Pat and Carrie foraged for shells. I channeled my inner 7 year old, and climbed the beach boulders.
After walking a while, we got back into the car. The day was really drizzly and foggy, and we were a bit worried that the ferry wouldn't be running, requiring an hour-long detour. Fortunately, it was running, and though we barely missed the first departure, it had cleared up a lot by the time it returned.
We went to tour Castle Ward House - a really nice area - and the set of Winterfell from the first season of Game of Thrones. Though, the cost was a bit steep, and we were "castled" out, so we passed on the house tour, but took lots of pictures.
From there, we went to a butterfly house and walled garden that we had taken the kids to last trip. The peacocks and peahens were still there (probably encouraged by the ice cream they stole from Cody last time). We were all kinda winding down, so after we left there, we headed straight for Dublin.
As we got close, we realized we were going to be on a toll road. Unfortunately, for the past few days we were in Northern Ireland (pounds), and we didn't have euros (or so we thought). So we exited to withdraw some, and find a toilet (if you ask for a restroom, you will get a confused look). After braving the unexpected detour, we had euros and headed back to finish the last part of the drive to Dublin. After we were back on the highway, Les confessed that he had found a 20 euro note. We all had a good laugh.
Once we found the B&B, Les and I took the car back to the rental agency, and rode the shuttle back to the hotel. Les and Pat treated us to dinner at TGI Fridays (she had been craving some normal American food), and feasted well. We spent the evening repacking and preparing to leave in the morning. It was a full day, and I am ready to be done with the next day of traveling.
