The world scholars this weekend took a trip to Salamanca Spain. We got the opportunity to visit the Cathedral of Salamanca as well as explore the city on our own. The city is just 100 km from the Portuguese border. The city has one of Spains larger universities the University of Salamanca. The Cathedral is very interesting because it is actually two cathedrals in one. The original cathedral is located on the right-hand side and served the city for a long time until the population grew and a new larger cathedral was needed. Instead of tearing down the older cathedral it was decided that would be a second cathedral connecting to the first. The both are laid out in Latin crosses, the first was fashioned in the form of a classic Romanesque cathedral. The second was built in the middle of the gothic period so it is fashioned in the form of a traditional gothic cathedral with high gothic arches and a large number of side chapels. The cathedral is also the final resting place for many members of the clergy, it is considered a sign of humility to be buried where so many would walk upon your grave.
