The University of Delaware World Scholars have been settling into life here in Madrid. One of the adventures we got to go on was a cooking class, now for all of us to go to the little cooking class would have been quite a sight so we split into smaller groups. We were able to learn how to cook some Spanish staples: paella, Camino cake, tortilla, and a Spanish spin on gazpacho. The opportunity was really great because while the class was taught in Spanish it gave us an opportunity to practice our language, skills while getting to find out who in the group had some skills in the kitchen. The food we made was so much fun to make and tasted even better. The gazpacho was super flavorful and how could it not be when topped with a staple of Spanish cuisine jamon and eggs. These two items are found in so many different dishes. The next item tortilla was not the tortilla we think of in the states but instead is an egg and potato mix that makes for a delicious dish that we enjoy quite often. The next dish of paella was delicious having already enjoyed this dish while by the coast on my Oceanography trip learning how to make it was quite fun. The dish is a mixture of rice, chicken, shrimp, clams, squid, and everything that you have left in the kitchen. The last dish we attempted was the Camino cake which is similar to a cinnamon coffee cake but is very popular in the Catholic pilgrimage of Santiago.
