My Oceanography class took a field trip to Murcia, Spain. While there we got the opportunity to discuss all sorts of issues that affect not only the oceans and coasts but the whole world. The class first arrived in Murcia and that night a few of my friends and I decided to walk to the beach and take a dip. The Mediterranian Sea, was absolutely amazing I got to go SCUBA diving, snorkeling, went to Cartagena for the TWO NAVAL museums. I got to meet a man who served in the Spanish Navy during the Korean War. I also got to see the first metal submarine and it was actually not welded but riveted together. The opportunities did not end there I got to go paddle boarding, hike up an island in the lagoon, and then one of my favorite parts was visiting the fish markets where the fisherman deliver their catch to be sold.
My trip was absolutely amazing, I never thought that this trip would be as informative and life-altering. I got to meet a woman who is pursuing her Ph.D. she is named Amelia the bottom left of the selfie with people. She runs a company called Planet Azul which facilitated our trip, she did an amazing job of being very informative and keeping us at work while managing. to not bore. It was very easy to be distracted our classroom was sitting on the beach of the Mederterrainin sea. The bottom picture is my new friend Pedro, he is a fisherman who has fished from the beaches of the Mediterain for 22 years now. He was the nicest and most patient person. I do not speak a whole lot of Spanish and by a lot I mean any, however, he patiently waited almost two minutes in between coherent sentences for me to figure out how to ask my questions of him and what I discovered was he is amazing I got a picture of him but he did not have the lighthouse and the moon behind him so ever the perfectionist he repositioned me and told me to make sure I got both. He wished me luck on his paper and I wished him luck on his catch. He told me not to worry because I had a photo of him and this would now bring me much luck and I would get an A on my oceanography trip. I hope he is right but none the less I am so grateful for the experiences that I am having right now.
Below are pictures of the beach near our hotel, outside Cartagena naval museum, the cove we scuba dived in, the lighthouse we went to see on our boat trip, a map as usual, and most of all Pedro and his catch.
