As part of my class for global politics, we took a trip to the Valley of the Fallen. The Valley of the Fallen was originally constructed to be a monument to the civil war and a monument to reconciliation. However, under Franco's direction, it became a monument to him and his regime. The people who built the monument were prisoners most of whom were forced, laborers. The walls of the monument are filled with the bodies of both sides of the civil war and the bodies of the workers that died there. The sight is actually home to a catholic church and the sight is very very divisive. It was one of the few places that I did not really enjoy while I have been here. It was very unsettling. It was, however, an interesting experience and one that I am grateful for. You are not allowed to take pictures within however I snuck a few.
