Iceland in 10 Days: The Ring Road Tour

We had a very relaxing day today which was much needed after the hectic last few. We were able to sleep in a bit this morning as we knew that the majority of our day today would be spent driving. There isn't a lot to do activity-wise along the east coast of Iceland and the small towns (mostly fishing villages) are very spread out, so if you're heading that way make sure to gas up in Hofn on the way out!

Day 6: Driving the Eastern Fjords

Faskrudsfjordur, Iceland

We had a very relaxing day today which was much needed after the hectic last few. We were able to sleep in a bit this morning as we knew that the majority of our day today would be spent driving. There isn't a lot to do activity-wise along the east coast of Iceland and the small towns (mostly fishing villages) are very spread out, so if you're heading that way make sure to gas up in Hofn on the way out!

Although there weren't many popular sightseeing destinations, this part of the island is extremely well known for its beautiful fjords (long inlets of ocean with high cliffs on either side) that you drive right in and out of along Route 1. We are staying in Faskrudsfjordur which was settled by French sailors in the 1800s as a fishing base. The French sailors built a local chapel and a hospital (which has since been converted into a hotel but is known to be haunted) and therefore most of the signage here is in French! The locals of Faskrudsfjordur (population 662) continue to celebrate their French heritage during a 4-day festival every year in July.

We immediately fell in love with the quiet village and are staying at our favourite Air BnB yet, a little red and white cottage right on the water with an incredible view. If you happen to be in the area, Cafe Sumarlina was a great spot for dinner with a patio overlooking the docks. Here is a link to our little cottage named Holl:

Tomorrow we're headed north and will be staying in Akureyri for two nights! That's all for today as we're resting up for our last 4 days in Iceland.
