Our final day before leaving this incredible country back to England. Our plans today were to travel back to Tokyo, do some last minute sightseeing plus shopping and finally to meet our friend me met, Kento for a farewell dinner.
We left Hiroshima, loaded up on snacks for the long train ride back to Tokyo (Bento boxes, sushi, sweets etc!) and boarded the train. We spent most of the journey in silence writing up our diaries and gorging on our feasts we had purchased. I had also made sure to book our green carriage seats to avoid the catastrophe that is to be demoted to the blue class carriages. After 4-5 hours we eventually made it back into the neon madness that is Tokyo!
I don't remember much of what we did in the day here apart from visiting some last minute shops and department stores in search of souvenir and treats for our friends back home. Our big plans today was to see Kento for some tasty food and we were due to meet outside Starbucks by the Shibuya crossing as this was close to Kento's workplace.
Prior to this however, Bish and I decided to give the Tokyo Metropoliton Government Building one last try after our two spectacular fails to see this at the beginning of our trip. This was a free tourist attraction in which you could ride the elevator up to the observation deck to get a panoramic view out across Tokyo city. Like pro's we navigated the Metro and streets to the building and at long last made it there in time to ride the elavator. Success! We stepped inside and the operator (fully uniformed and in white gloves) pressed the "Up" button allowing us to ride up to the 100th or something floor!
As we exited the elevator we walked into a large room with a cafe and soveneer shop in the center. All around it however were large glass windows which looked out onto the streets of Tokyo below. It was nighttime by this point so we got some pretty epic views I have to say! Looking down on the tiny cars (people not even visible) below I got a little dizzy so had to step back a bit as we were that high up! After many tried and failed photos due to the glass and the flash on my camera we deicded we had best leave otherwise we'd be late to meet Kento and so rode down the elevator and back to the Metro to Shibuya station.
We arrived at Shibuya and walked around the station in search of the right exit for the junction. As we did this we managed to find a floor that had an epic view of the junction below. I stood here and filmed a few crossings to watch the madness unfold as people crossed from all different angles. Eventually we exited and found the Starbucks which was literally by the crossing itself. In heinsight this was not the best idea.. Shibuya is probably one of the most pedestrianised areas of Tokyo.. so meeting someone here who we barely knew would prove difficult! Luckily Facebook came to the rescue and I was able to message Kento to say exactly where we were.
Kento eventually greeted us and we spent some time chatting and explaining all the cool stuff we had done before he led us through the busy streets of Shibuya to one of his favorite restaurants. A local Korean BBQ joint. The place was underground and packed with people. This was surely a good sign! Kento spoke with the server and we were led to a square table that had a circular grill in the center. Kento explained that we would order a "all you can eat" for 2 hours where we would order various vegetable dishes and also cuts of meats such as wagyu beef. All I can say was this was absolutely awesome! The grill in the middle was lit and we were brought plate after plate of food for us to grill and eat. The wagyu beef was a clear winner but we also sampled some stranger cuts like cows tongue.. sounds bad..tastes good! All this washed down with a highball (whisky and ginger ale) went down a treat!
After dinner Kento suggested we take on the local gaming arcade. Being gamers, Bish and I eagerly agreed. We played Tekken, Street Fighter, slots and of course.. crane games. It was an amazing way to spend our final evening and once we exhausted all of our money and energy, Kento took us the tube to bid us farewell. It was a perfect way to end our holiday and we got one last photo with Kento before heading to our hotel for the evening for bed.
All in all I can say without question I had an incredible holiday that I won't ever forget and I have some really fond memories of this incredible time. And so this concludes my diary. I hope you enjoyed reading as much as I enjoyed writing. Until the next trip.. Sayonara!!!
