Today began with an early breakfast and class discussion, during which we talked about the day yesterday. We had mixed opinions about Matilda especially when it came to the continuity of the effects in the show. I personally disagreed with these comments, especially after having read the original book, seen the film, and seen a recording of the Broadway production.
Our only obligation for the day was the Victoria and Albert Museum, which was the one I presented earlier in the class. I was very excited to go see it in person, especially their expansive theatre collection.
Upon entrance to the exhibit, the first thing we were met with was a stunning display of the Elphaba dress worn by Idina Menzel in Wicked on Broadway. It was so crazy to get to see it up close, especially after years of daydreaming about it. Other than that dress, there were also costumes from The Lion King along with a fabulous video where Julie Taymor talked about what it took to create the costumes. I was also able to see the original Ugly Stepsisters costumes from Cinderella, back when the roles were played by men.
Other than costumes, there was also a model of the set of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which I thought was most intriguing. In addition, someone had created an extension of the exhibit, called "Behind the Curtain", which featured the Cameron Mackintosh chairs along with portraits of several famous actors and other theatre professionals who either were or had been visiting professors at Oxford.
After leaving the theatre collection, Nara and I went to explore the jewelry room. We were able to see many, many shiny things, including one of Queen Victoria's tiaras. It was quite fascinating to be this close to some of these objects, many of which were quite old.
For the remainder of the day, I decided to take some time to myself, and go back to the hostel to nap. After everything we had been seeing, I was very worn out and was ready to take time to recharge before the last three days.
