Today we found the German equivalent of Portsea, except it has a lake instead of a sea as it's water playground. It's where the rich come to play and we also believe it was part of Germany that once belonged to the French as the fashion is significantly more stylish that anywhere else in Germany. They also happened to be celebrating a French food and wine festival in the town square - excellent!
Before indulging in sorbet, crepes and wine we decided we should see some of the smaller towns around the island. The day was so gorgeous, everything gleamed so bright against the snow capped Bavarian Alps in the background so we bought a ticket for an hour long feryy trip that stopped at various smaller towns along the lake. I particularly wanted to see the memorial to King Ludwig II in the small town of Berg.
King Ludwig was the last king of Bavaria before he was paid off after the reunification of Germany, or the second Reich, in 1871. He was a sensitive soul, most likely a gay man, who loved art, music and romantic architecture. He is responsible for many of Germany's most famous tourist attractions including the fairy tale castle Neuschwanstein. Is is controversially said that not long after the reunification he went mad and was confined to his smaller private palace in Berg . Late one afternoon he went for a walk with his doctor and they were both found dead in shallow water two hours later. There are many theories about the death but many believe he killed his doctor and was then murdered by government guards whilst trying to escape Berg.
After all that excitement and intrigue it was time to re board the ferry and enjoy the best of the French festival. We ate and drank and generally enjoyed the sunshine with many other revelers till late afternoon. We headed back to Mindelheim where we are spending another few nights. The hotel has funny big square but almost featherless pillows, which I dislike immensely, so i'm not sure we'll be staying the full four nights we intended.
