One of my favorite cities is Berlin, Germany. Paige, Cassandra and I planned a trip from Paris, through Germany, ending in London. We visited Berlin, Lutherstadt Wittenberg, and Hamburg and as the reason for our travels to Germany was the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation in Lutherstadt, I wasn't really giving much thought to our visits to Berlin and Hamburg. However, Berlin quickly became my favorite European city. Upon arrival, we got lost (of course) and there were three different kind strangers who noticed our distress and helped us find our way! This may not be shocking for American standards, but after living in Paris, the term "kind stranger" is not one that we are familiar with. After getting settled into our Air BnB, we set out to find some dinner. We ate some delicious donor kebab and turned in early that night. The next day was the only full day that we had in Berlin, so we really lived it up. We hit every major tourist destination, and each one was a grave lesson in history- we visited the Jewish Holocaust Memorial, The Topography of Terror, Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenbourg Gate, and the East Side Gallery. I really, really appreciated each of these pieces of history and what they represented, and I realized how proud I should be of the history of my nation and the legacy of righteousness that I have been left! The Germans not only caused an unimaginable amount of pain, but they also experienced pain themselves. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to reflect on the history lessons that Berlin provides, and I'm also thankful I had the opportunity to partake in the unbelievable food that Germany offers!! I did not eat one meal there that wasn't absolutely delicious. The metros and streets were impeccable, the people were incredibly kind and welcoming overall (also should be noted - everyone spoke English :) ) and the food was amazing!!! Overall, the total Berlin experience was incredible and I can't wait to go back someday!
