Notre Dame
Notre Dame was a surreal experience in many ways. The building was massive, and it is incredible to consider not only that it took 300 years to construct, but it was also constructed through times of upheaval. The detail and design is unparalleled- intricately carved statues cover the face of the cathedral and are covering almost the entire building. Each carving is phenomenal and could stand alone as a work of art itself, yet there are thousands all over the building. Ruskin mentions seven laws of architecture that should be
present in his article, "Seven Lamps of Architecture." Notre Dame was an excellent example of all seven, however the two that stood out to me were the power of the cathedral, and the life of the cathedral. In regards to power, the building was massive. Standing at the entrance I felt miniscule. Inside, with the high, ornate ceilings and the very detailed and regal decorations were very overwhelming. The cathedral also breathed life; it was clear than many human hands had labored to create such a beautiful building. Nothing seemed machine made in the least- all very beautifully original and unique. Notre Dame was constructed as an act of worship to God, something that is heartening and invokes a worshipful heart in itself. Centuries ago, people were carving the apostles and angels and demons and the way to Heaven on a building larger than ever, all to glorify my God. It is awe-inspiring to me that my same God was worshiped here long before I was born. How amazing!
