The Salon du Refusé was a salon of the artists that were rejected by the pretentious Royal Acadamy’s salon. They staged their own salon, and there Edward Manet was introduced to the art world. The motivation of the Impressionist movement was essentially the rejection of artists from the Royal Academy. At the Musée d’Orsay, I would have to say that my favorite painting was “Le Christ chez les paysans” [Christ with the Peasants] by Fritz von Uhde. The painting portrays Christ at a table with a group of everyday people. I really loved the painting because it shows Christ gathering in an everyday activity with everyday people. It puts Christ at a personal level, and this is something that was not common during the time that it was painted. Family meals have always been something really important in my life, and I have always loved the concept of people gathering together around a meal. It’s something that is important to God I think, because feasting is mentioned several times in the Bible as something that will happen in Heaven! Gathering together to partake in a meal has always looked a little bit like what I think Heaven will look like, so this photo really resonated with me.
