When we visited Merv, in eastern Turkmenistan we discovered that the most popular goods were fruits such as bottle gourds or kedou, melons or kauon, watermelon or kharpous, grapes or uzum, peaches or sheptali, apricots or errik, and jujube or igde. Some other notable commodities were wooden spoons, dishes, and knives. We tried all of the fruits and bought some clothes, sheepskin, and arms were also sold. In Merv, they had huts where we could stop and rest. We also saw traders who traded while giving their camels food and water to refuel their camels and they filtered the water in order to decrease sickness. Most of the people in Merv are Sunni Muslims and Christian. A man named Abu Muslim who we met commissioned a mosque to be built alongside the Majan Canal, which flowed a kilometer to the west of Gyaur Kala city wall. We met many women of ancient Merv and their main responsibilities involved cooking, tending the home, and making textiles while the men hunt, tend the herd, and keep the horses.
