The St Peter’s Basilica is considered a very holy site and according to the church the burial spot for St Peter who was the first apostle for Jesus before being crucified. The plans for the basilica changed two times over the course of the construction. The first change happened after Bramante who was the first chief architect was removed because of constant interruptions and Raphael took over and it changed again when Michelangelo took over after Raphael’s death. It is significant to not only Rome’s culture in the later part of the empire when they became Christians but to Christianity itself because it was one of the four churches in the world that are major basilica which is the highest-ranking roman catholic churches, and it was the largest until 1989. The basilica also has major cultural significance in its architecture being a mixture of Greek and roman styles and it holds the Pietà which was a statue carved by Michelangelo.
