Trip to Mesopotamia

For my next adventure, I decided to spend it with a family! I was curious to learn about children and family life and ancient times. The family consisted of the daughter, the son, the father, and the pregnant wife. I started out by speaking to the wife. I was curious to learn about prenatal care, especially since at this age, childbirth could be dangerous. She showed me an amulet that she wore around her neck, it was supposed to bring luck. In addition to this, she also took various herbal potions and performed rituals, and incantations. She worried about Lamashtu, a female demon that threatened the life of a mother and child (Salisbury and Aldrete). She said that when it was time for the baby to be delivered she would wear an image of the demon Pazuzu to counteract Lamashtu. It was very fascinating to learn about this! I then spent some time talking to the only son. Throughout history, sons have always been sought after because they continue the bloodline. It is the same in this world. If parents didn’t have a son, occasionally they would adopt a son and raise him as their own. Sons are important in this society, though the boy is only 7, he has already begun learning his father's trade. “Usually, a son learned his father's trade or profession by observing and helping at an early age. He was able to take over his father's position in due time, as a scribe, an artisan, and so on” (Salisbury and Aldrete). The boy's father was a carpenter, so he spent the majority of his childhood in the shop watching his father work. However, like a boy in modern society, he still loved to play with jump ropes, mini weapons like bows and arrows, model carts or chariots, and even mini furniture. Once the boy gets to a certain age he will have to start working to take care of the family, especially as the parent's age. When his parents do pass, he will inherit most things including the house. I had a great time learning about various prenatal care and toys for kids during this trip! I’m looking forward to tomorrow's adventure!
