The year is now 315 AD and the Roman Emperor, Constantine, just defeated the Tyrant Maxentius at the battle of Milvian Bridge in Rome. The city is rejoicing due to the fact that Maxentius is defeated. The government is about to reveal the monument designed for Constantine. A government official has just announced that the arch will present Constantine as a living continuation of the most successful Roman empires. The people around me cheer and I can tell that they take pride in the Empire’s military victories and effective government.
After the arch is revealed, I see many people heading to churches. I look around and see crosses around the empire and I try to remember what it looked like before they were there. Ever since Constantine became emperor of the Roman Empire, many churches have been built. This is because Constantine is the first emperor to adhere to Christianity. He issued an edict that protected Christians in the empire. The edict was known as the edict of Milan. Many people in the Roman Empire switched to the worship of Christianity after the edict was made. There were no more worshipping of “gods” as there was now only one god. Most people did not mind this change, but I did see a few that opposed against it. I’m not sure what ever happened to them as I don’t see them around the empire any more.
I knew that Constantine would eventually become ill when planning the expansion of the empire. While I am thankful for taking History 101, it taught me the good side of ancient history and the bad side. I knew the Roman Empire would be coming to an end shortly due to invasions by Barbarian tribes. I am so thankful I got to see and learn so much about the empire that I love so dearly. I knew it was now time to end my journey back in time to the ancient Roman empire. I am now about to hop on my time travel machine and travel back to the crazy year of 2020!
