Chapter 107: Completing Our Tour of the Island of Ice and Fire

After leaving Iceland in a rush back in June, we had promised ourselves that we shall return, and after Poland we indeed did, flying there via Copenhagen (GDN - CPH - KEF).

Our original May-June plan had been to circle the island counterclockwise, but we had managed to complete, more or less, only the southern side (see here: https://www.traveldiariesapp.com/en/diary/1304eb60-9b2d-48bf-a054-b5bd2387cd44). Returning now, in August-September, we

therefore decided to focus on the northern side and some of the western side, forgoing the eastern side altogether.

Our 10-day, 2,150-kilometre tour included:
- the Húsafell region (specifically Hraunfossar, Viðgelmir; 1 day)
- a clockwise drive northwards (via Akureyri; 1 day)
- the Mývatn and Jökulsárgljúfur regions (specifically Hverir, Leirhnjúkur, Víti, Grjótagjá, Hverfjall, Dimmuborgir, Höfði, Skútustaðagígar, Húsavík, Ásbyrgi, Botnstjörn, Hljóðaklettar, Dettifoss, Goðafoss; 3 days)
- a counterclockwise drive southwards (via Akureyri and Sauðárkrókur; 1 day)
- an attempt to visit the Snæfellsnes Peninsula (foiled by gale strength winds and almost constant rain; 1 day)
- the Landmannalaugar region, taking advantage of our having a 4x4 car this time around (specifically Landmannalaugar, Ljótipollur, Hnausapollur. Sigöldugljúfur; 1 day)
- some shopping in Reykjavík and Keflavik (in preparation for the next chapter; 2 days)

We stayed at 4 different guesthouses for a total of 7 nights, 1 airport hotel for a total of 1 night, and at 2 different apartments for a total of 2 nights.
